JESSICA WILLIAMS
KIOSKEN STUDIO RESIDENT, OCTOBER
01.10.2024 - 28.10.2024
Jessica Williams was our KIOSKEN STUDIO in October. During her time at Kiosken Studio, Jessica built upon her previous work, ‘pile’ which is a meditation upon physical prints, the past, the future, and artistic value. For the residency at Kiosken, a new page was unveiled.
She also soft launched the fanzine What Should An Artist look like? What should a practice feel like? composed of her never-before-published and unedited notes from the truly odd, special, and hard to describe experience of being a resident inside the museums' chaotic opening exhibition.
Jessica was present at Kiosken for two long weekends with her 5 year old daughter, where they hosted risography workshops for children and parents.
On Saturday, October 12th Jessica hosted a soft launch of pile and the fanzine What should an artist look like? What should a practice feel like? We celebrate with light non-alcoholic refreshments: various kombuchas brewed on wild botanicals foraged by Williams together with her two children.
On Saturday, the 27th of October, there was a free and open to the public workshop for parents and children, where we printed large collaborative A2 posters using analog materials only.
Pile was originally produced for the opening exhibition Jeg kaller det kunst at Nasjonalmuseet in 2022, pile is an experimental artist publication made to be put together by the public and purchased on a sliding scale. People sadly tend to throw away that which is free. It was printed live at the museum during a four week period on Williams' risograph which was moved, along with most of her publishing studio, into the museum for the occasion.
A question that is always on Williams' mind is "It is possible to cultivate a sustainable artistic practice?" Not just when it comes to the materiality of works, which of course matters enormously, but also regarding one's life outside art and real, hard economic considerations. This layered question, along with the presence of her daughter, dictated her days and activities at Kiosken.
